V-Ray for SketchUp render settings is a balance between visual quality and time efficiency. For version 7 and above, settings are primarily managed through the V-Ray Asset Editor Chaos Docs 1. Engine Selection: CPU vs. GPU

CPU: Reliability for complex scenes; uses your computer's main processor.

Choosing how your computer processes the image is the first critical step in the V-Ray Asset Editor:

The Standard Setup (Recommendation):

  • Type: Use Reinhard (burn value 0.8) for balanced interiors. Use Linear with a custom Exposure value (e.g., 1.5) for exterior sun scenes.
  • Burn Value: Low values (0.5) preserve highlight detail. High values (1.0) increase contrast.
  1. Hidden Defaults: Some powerful optimizations (like "Use Local Host" for distributed rendering or "Dynamic Memory Limit") are hidden deep in the "System" roll-out, confusing new users when their 64GB RAM machine runs out of memory.
  2. Inconsistency: Some GPU settings do not work on CPU and vice versa (e.g., specific volume fog effects or hair materials), creating a disjointed experience if you switch engines mid-project.

2. The User Interface: The Asset Editor

In SketchUp, V-Ray controls are housed in the Asset Editor. This is divided into two distinct tabs:

: Provides real-time feedback as you move the camera or change materials. Useful for initial framing and material setup. Progressive Rendering
