Guide to NORSOK R-001: Mechanical Equipment

1. Overview & Scope

NORSOK R-001 (Mechanical Equipment) defines requirements for the procurement, design, manufacturing, documentation, and storage of mechanical equipment intended for use in Norwegian petroleum activities.

Step 5: Certification & Recertification Interval

If the equipment passes, you issue a Reuse Certificate. This becomes part of the facility's safety case. The certificate specifies a requalification interval (e.g., 6 years for separators, 12 years for air receivers). norsok r001

2. Standardization = Cost Efficiency Before NORSOK, different operators had wildly different specifications. This created inefficiencies in the supply chain. By adhering to R-001, manufacturers can produce "off-the-shelf" components that are compliant with the NCS, reducing engineering hours and lead times. Guide to NORSOK R-001: Mechanical Equipment 1

Purpose and Scope

  1. Material selection: Piping materials must be compatible with the service conditions, including fluid properties, temperature, and pressure.
  2. Piping sizing: Pipe sizes must be adequate for the required flow rates, pressure drops, and fluid velocities.
  3. Wall thickness: Pipe wall thickness must be sufficient to withstand internal and external loads, including pressure, temperature, and external forces.
  4. Corrosion protection: Piping systems must be designed to prevent corrosion, using techniques such as coatings, cathodic protection, and corrosion-resistant materials.
  5. Support and hangers: Piping systems must be properly supported and hung to prevent excessive stress, sagging, or damage.
