Title: Beyond the Algorithm: A Critical Framework for Recommending Popular Anime and Manga Series

Abstract

The global proliferation of anime and manga has transformed a niche subculture into a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry. However, the sheer volume of available titles—over 6,000 anime series and 15,000 manga volumes released annually—creates a “paradox of choice” for new and intermediate viewers. This paper argues that effective recommendations cannot rely solely on popularity metrics (e.g., MyAnimeList rankings) but must instead consider narrative archetypes, demographic targeting (demographics), and psychological engagement factors. By analyzing ten contemporary popular series across multiple genres, this study proposes a four-dimensional recommendation framework: Genre DNA, Pacing Profile, Emotional Payload, and Accessibility Index.
