If you have an old, dusty Android TV box with a Rockchip RK3229 chip, you might think it’s e-waste. Think again. With EmuELEC, that cheap HDMI dongle or set-top box can transform into a surprisingly capable retro gaming console.

Identify your board: Open the box and look for the PCB model number (e.g., MXQ-4K-V02, R29).
Download the correct image: Go to the official EmuELEC releases (v4.6 or v5.x) and select the RK3229 build.
Flash the image: Use Balena Etcher or Rufus to write the .img file to a microSD card (class 10 or better).
Replace the DTB: After flashing, the SD card will have a device_trees folder. Copy the appropriate .dtb file (e.g., rk3229-mxq.dtb) to the root of the SD card and rename it to rk3229.dtb.
Boot: Insert the SD card, plug in a USB gamepad, and power on. The box should boot from the SD card automatically. If not, use a toothpick to press the reset button inside the AV port while powering on.
